Right, that’s what I thought. Even though most people think of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, there are literally hundreds of ways to enter the social media fray. As you’re attempting to market your business, be sure to look long and hard for all of the available opportunities out there. Here are some you might not have considered:

Niche Sites

Instead of casting a big net on a major player like Facebook, why not try looking for sites that specialize in a particular niche that you target? You might not get the large numbers you might get on mainstream sites, but your traffic will be a lot more targeted. Here’s a great list broken down by interest

Go Yahoo!

Yahoo offers several options for the savvy social media marketer. Yahoo Answers is great for providing targeted Q&A that promotes your expert status. You can either answer questions that are already there, or “seed” questions yourself. The trick is to actually answer the question. This isn’t the format for your elevator pitch. Even if it’s your own seed question, people that find it will want a real answer to the question. Speaking of finding, Google loves Yahoo. ‘Nuff said.

Online Forums

Remember those? Most sites have companion forums. There are also several that are stand alone forums as well. These are similar to the niche social sites in that they cater to a specific interest group. While some people casually skim the forums, there are always hardcore “power users” that live on the forums. These are communities just like Facebook or Myspace, but it is also a great opportunity to establish yourself as a resource in front of a group of true believers. As an additional benefit, a lot of the forum dwellers might also be bloggers which could open up another avenue of exposure as well.
